Kakum National Park, Cape Coast Castle & Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle, built in 1482 by the Portuguese in Elmina, Ghana, was originally named Castelo de São Jorge da Mina. As the first European trading post on the Gulf of Guinea and the oldest European structure south of the Sahara, it played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a somber glimpse into history with its dungeons and coastal views.

Cape Coast Castle, one of Ghana’s largest standing castles, began as a Portuguese trade lodge in 1555 on what became the Cape Coast. In 1653, the Swedish Africa Company built a permanent wooden fortress to trade gold and lumber. Now a historical museum managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, it offers a profound look into the region’s colonial and slave trade history.
